Gilad Shalit, born 28 August 1986, is an Israeli and French national and an IDF soldier who was attacked and kidnapped from Israel on 25 June 2006 by Hamas militants in a cross-border raid. Shalit was captured near theKerem Shalom crossing (in Israel), and has been held as a hostage at an unknown location in the Gaza Strip by Hamas and deprived of all International Red Cross visits since his abduction.
Shalit's hasn't been granted any of the human rights due to a captured soldier under the Geneva Conventions, that entitles them to receive visits from the Red Cross and to communicate with family members, and a ransom, even if not of a pecuniary nature, has been demanded for his return.
The Red Cross Director-General Yves Daccord also stated that "The Schalit family have the right under international humanitarian law to be in contact with their son".
